As you’ve probably heard, an upcoming Disney film is Moana the first Polynesian princess! The concept art is beautiful and it looks like Disney is trying to find the voice for their new heroine. What girl doesn’t dream of being a Disney princess? I came across the video for a possible candidate and I have to say; Hoku Pavao from Hawaii seems like a perfect fit! She has the look for PR appearances to represent Disney, she has a good connection to the character, she has a lovely singing and character voice, and could be a good role model for girls. Check out her audition video below and if you like what you see and hear then SHARE and help a dream come true. Time to get this princess to her rightful place at Disney!! [UPDATE] If you think Hoku would be perfect for Moana be sure to share and put #HokuisMoana to help her dream come true!

I found her audition to be very professional. She is a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. I wish that she would have chosen to represent her culture and her native language in her audition. I believe that this princess should speak fluent Hawaiian and be living her culture. I do hope she does well as I also hope for this wonderful contender – http://mauiwatch.com/2014/12/princess-moana-disney-video-audition-makamae-auwae/

Thank you for your comment Mele! Hoku, I think may have chosen her song to show she can fit the Disney vocal style and probably assumed that many girls would sing traditional songs. She is a native of Hawaii and you can hear that in her introduction and she mentions how she wants to represent her culture too. I love the character she adds to “God Help The Outcasts.” Something very important for a voice over role is being able to suit other styles, but still display a sense of “self”, and I believe she does that.
I checked out the link for Makamae Auwae. She also has a beautiful look and voice. However, with her style and riffs technique I feel she would be better suited to be featured on the soundtrack (such as Julie Fowlis for “Brave”). It would be great for her professional singing career and she could still represent her culture!
I still believe Hoku Pavao would be best for voicing Moana’s character, but thank you for sharing your view and with great insight! I love all these girls getting the chance to audition for this role and to be so connected to it. It’s wonderful and I understand that it’s very important to so many girls of the same culture to be represented well.
I’m just glad Disney opened up the audition to them rather than a big celebrity name. I do wish both the girls BREAK A LEG! Disney will get the last decision and I can’t wait to see the film itself!

That was such a beautiful beautiful and beautifully well done. I am Polynesian woman. It is so heartfelt to have a Polynesian Princess from Disney. When you here the word Polynesia. A lot of people only mistaken it for Hawaii.. It so awesome that you portrayed another Disney song. Well because it’s Disney. Anyway. Congrats Hoku You deserve it.

They gotta make Moana more polynesian looking, meaning not such a small nose and more curvy body.

I like that idea! Being a curvy girl myself, I think that would be nice to connect to. 🙂 Great comment Alika!

Hoku is the perfect Moana! Her voice is a “Disney” voice naturally; sweet, flowing, absolutely beautiful. Very poised. Known her when she was going to school. She is Moana💖

I think hoku is a great candidate but maka seems closer to the character (princess moana) and closer to the age that is portrayed in the film. She also has a very strong voice and would be a great princess moana

Thanks for chiming in Mauinative! Age could be a factor for the character. I think they said Moana will be fourteen in the film? Also consider though, that Jodi Benson was 28 when she did the voice for 16 year old Ariel; and Paige O’Hara was 35 when she voiced the 17 year old Belle.

Our dear friend Hoku is the perfect Moana. My husband and I filmed her audition and host it on our YouTube page. She is poised, professional, professionally trained both in drama and in voice in New York, a perfect spokeswoman, ready to walk the red carpet or appear on Jimmy Kimmel tomorrow, in addition to represent her culture with perfect authority. Let’s make her hashtag go viral: #HokuisMoana
